I’m a Twitter Convert!

Yes folks, there was a time when I was anti-Twitter.  I couldn’t possibly see how it could be of any use to me.  Twitter was just for celebrities with millions of followers, or huge recognizable brands, or famous couples airing their dirty laundry over the Internet. What on earth would I do on Twitter?  Me…an actress brand new to New York, starting back at the bottom of the food pyramid with no big projects on the horizon and not a large fan following.  Who would really want to know what I was doing, where I was eating, and what shows I was seeing?  Eventually, I did cave in and set up a Twitter account, but even then it was only so I could follow my favorite NYC food trucks.  (No joke.)  I rarely tweeted myself…just here and there.  Over time, I gained a small handful of followers, mostly family and friends.

Then, I signed up for the Social Media Power Player class with Dallas Travers & Therese Cator and everything changed!  I have been learning how I can effectively use Twitter to keep up-to-date with what’s happening in the theater community, connect with industry folk and build genuine relationships, and better market myself as an actress.  I’ve been learning that Twitter isn’t just blatant advertising and it isn’t just a bunch of narcissistic people broadcasting their every move and thought.  Although both of those things do go on, Twitter can be so much more than just that.  Twitter is real time conversation happening among people from all over the world.  It’s sharing information, advice, insight, jokes, photos & videos, recipes, you name it!  Now that I am getting into the swing of things, I’m actually having a lot of fun with it.  Not only that, I’m finding that at this stage in my career, Twitter can probably be of a lot more use to me professionally than Facebook.  Yep, I said it.  (Although, I still prefer Facebook for keeping up with family and friends on a personal level, and I will definitely still continue to cultivate my professional Facebook fan page.)  So, I guess you can say that Twitter proved me wrong. I’ve been converted.
