I was walking home this afternoon, listening to music on my iPhone as I often do. Backpack slung across my shoulder. Beautiful NYC day. I spotted a familiar face walking toward me, making his way along 5th Ave in the opposite direction. It was Kevin Kline. He was on his cell phone. We made very brief eye contact. Not, “Oh my God, you’re a celebrity!” Not, “Yes, yes…I get recognized all the time.” Just a brief acknowledgement between two strangers in this crowded city. It was kind of cool.
As I walked away, the first thing I thought was, “I’ll have to tell Jeremy when I get home.” (Since moving to New York, I’m usually the one who spots celebrities during our random comings and goings. Sometimes, he recognizes them. Sometimes, he doesn’t.) But, after that moment passed, the thought that occurred to me was this. We’re not all that different, Kevin Kline and I. Sure, he’s a celebrity and an Oscar & Tony winner. But, aside from that, on this particular day we have something in common. We’re just two actors walking along the streets of New York.
The rest of the world just doesn’t know who I am…yet.
